About Us

The publication that became Out originated in March 1973 as a single-page newsletter produced by the year-old "gay liberation" organization Gay Alternatives Pittsburgh; as the newsletter's page count increased, its name changed to Pittsburgh Gay News and a tabloid newspaper format was adopted.

In February 1977, PGN released the first issue of Gay Life, a handbill-sized glossy that was revamped in November 1979 to become a magazine titled Out. Out has been published in its current tabloid newspaper format since August 1980. Out Publishing Co. Inc.'s current publishers Tony Molnar-Strejcek and Ed Molnar-Strejcek, purchased the company in November 1994.

To serve our readers—the gay and lesbian community and their allies in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas of western and central Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia—and our advertisers as an indispensable source of news and information.

To offer a wide range of information not readily available in any other single source; in each issue Out presents local and national news, health information, commentary, arts and entertainment features, a complete guide to the month's local events through our "Nightlife" and "Out and About" announcements and "What's Happening" calendar of events, and display and classified advertising.

To present news and information of interest to our readers fairly and objectively and to the best of the ability of our talented and experienced staff; the commitment of Out's primary editorial staff members is reflected through their combined total of almost 70 years of service to our readers!
