Are these the Stein Club’s final endorsements?
The Gertrude Stein Political Club has announced its endorsements for the upcoming primary. And sadly, it may the club’s final endorsement in its 30-year history.
The organization was founded as a pro-LGBT, pro-choice, anti-racism and multi-partisan organization interesting in raising LGBT issues with political candidates. Its first president was Rich Meritzer
“Our major accomplishment was candidate education,” said founding member Mary Robison.
The Stein club tracks voting records of candidates and also send questionnaires to the candidates concerning important issues of the day.
“We revised our questionnaire frequently,” said Robison. “When we introduced a question on same-sex marriage, most of the candidates were baffled. Now most of them are well aware of the issue.”
But now, unless leadership roles are filled and new members take on various responsibilities, the organization is in danger of closing.
“We are in desperate need of fresh energy and fresh ideas,” Robison said.
She added, “We feel strongly that a member of the LGBT community should be president and spokesperson.”
In a press release from the club, it stated: “If you value what the club does, and can give 2-3 hours a month, plus an additional 5-10 hours in the month before either election, please step up. We, and LGBT Pittsburgh, need you—right now. Dues can be reduced or waived in exchange for executive committee duties.”
In closing Robison stressed the feelings of the organization: “If you feel this work is over now and your issues have been won, shed a tear for the group’s passing and turn the page. If you feel that battle is not over yet, please join us and volunteer your time.”
