On Jan. 30, Dreams of Hope will launch its 2011 performance season with the production Bully Me. Through spoken word, movement, drama and song, Dreams of Hope’s young performers explore the impact of bullying on LGBT youth. William Saroyan’s The Time of Your Life will be performed now through Feb. 6 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Directed by John Amplas, the play features the Point Park Conservatory Theatre Company. The Pittsburgh Symphony will present a two-week Tchaikovsky Festival from Feb. 2-12 featuring concerts, panel discussions, movies, poetry, chamber music and more. This festival honoring the music of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky will be held at various locations such as Heinz Hall, Carnegie-Mellon University and Duquesne University. The controversial video A Fire in My Belly by artist David Wojnarowicz will continue playing through Feb. 13 at the Andy Warhol Museum and the Mattress Factory. The video was part of the exhibit Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. The removal of Wojnarowicz’s video from the exhibit sparked an uproar after the Catholic League and several conservative members of Congress complained because the video depicts ants crawling over a crucifix.
A young man comes to terms with his identity and his family’s mysterious past in Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet running through Feb. 13 at City Theatre.
